A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING ATTALA THERESE YOUNG OF PIEDMONT ON HER OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE AT ERSKINE COLLEGE.

Whereas, Attala Therese Young is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Young of Piedmont. She attended Woodmont High School in Piedmont and currently attends Erskine College in Due West; and

Whereas, Ms. Young has maintained a B- average academically throughout her high school and college careers; and

Whereas, she is a superb basketball player and is the first player in Erskine College history, woman or man, to score 2,000 career points; and

Whereas, she is Erskine's highest woman's career scorer and highest career scorer, woman or man; and

Whereas, she has the most points in a game for an Erskine woman player, namely, 37 against Carson-Newman during the 1993-94 season and against Limestone in the 1994-95 season; and

Whereas, she also has the most field goals in a game (18 against Carson-Newman in 1993-94), as well as the most points scored in a week (124 during the week of February 20-26, 1995, in four games); and

Whereas, Erskine completed the 1994-95 season with a 16-11 record, its first winning season in eleven years; the Lady Flying Fleet won 12 of its final 16 games; Ms. Young was the leading scorer in 24 games and the leading rebounder in 18 games; she was the leading scorer in 15 of the 16 victories, and she twice had more than 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game; and

Whereas, she participated in numerous school and athletic activities while a student at Woodmont High School and captured many prestigious awards for her athletic talent; and

Whereas, Ms. Young has also earned many awards and honors for her athletic success and talent at Erskine and was designated a candidate for "All American" in basketball for the 1994-95 season; and

Whereas, not only has Attala Young achieved high standards academically, but she has also attained All-American status in athletics; she is an excellent role model and a most outstanding young woman; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are delighted to have this opportunity to pay special recognition to such a fine and deserving person. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates and commends Attala Therese Young of Piedmont on her outstanding accomplishments as a student-athlete at Erskine College.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Young.
