TO RECOGNIZE THE LIMESTONE COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE TEAM ON ITS SECOND NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DIVISION II TITLE IN THREE YEARS AND TO CELEBRATE THE RETURN OF THE TITLE TROPHY TO GAFFNEY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the Limestone College men's lacrosse team redeemed the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II championship title with an 11-9 defeat of top-rated and previously undefeated New York Tech on May 26 at Rutgers University; and
Whereas, the 13-2 Limestone Saints proved that their shocking capture of the 2000 crown was the real thing by returning the title trophy to Gaffney after a disappointing loss in last year's championship matchup; and
Whereas, seven different Saints scored to advance the championship run, led by Most Outstanding Player Devan Spilker's three goals and Jason Randolph's game-high point effort of three goals and two assists; and
Whereas, All-American defenseman Travis Gillespie and the Limestone defense backed up junior All-American goalie Matt Malloy to trim the favored Tech advantage, a 13-point offensive average for the season; and
Whereas, senior attack Nick Carlson wrapped up his Limestone career as the all-time top lacrosse scorer and point producer; and
Whereas, Coach T. W. Johnson is proud of his team's all-out sixty-minute effort and ecstatic to return the championship crown to Gaffney and the team's loyal fans. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That members of the General Assembly recognize the Limestone College men's lacrosse team on its second National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II title in three years and celebrate the return of the title trophy to Gaffney, South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Johnson on behalf of the team.
