TO RECOGNIZE THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS STATE OF THE UNDERWOOD FAMILY OF CHESTER AND TO EXTEND THE BEST WISHES TO THE UNDERWOOD FAMILY ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR FAMILY REUNION.
Whereas, the first annual reunion of the Underwood Family, descendants of Reverend Chester Arthur Underwood and Lila Gertrude McAdams Underwood, is being celebrated; and
Whereas, the C. A. Underwood family began in 1917 with the marriage of C. A. Underwood of Elberton, Georgia, and Lila Gertrude McAdams of Abbeville, South Carolina. Reverend Underwood pastored churches in Ninety Six, Greenwood, Plum Branch, and Abbeville until his death; and
Whereas, of this union were born six children: Rosaline Underwood Johnson, Beatrice Underwood Frazier, Mabel Underwood Quarles, Arthur D. Underwood, Sr., Ethel Underwood Atkinson, and John H. Underwood; and
Whereas, the family moved to Chester in 1948. Reverend Underwood died in 1949 and Mrs. Underwood died in 1991. All the children continue to reside in Chester; and
Whereas, this outstanding family will soon celebrate its heritage at a family reunion; and
Whereas, Underwood descendents have achieved great success in many business endeavors, including private health nursing, textiles, and food services; and
Whereas, Underwood descendents have served in the community and State on many boards and commissions in the Chester area, including the Chester County Builders Association, Chester County Housing Authority, Chester Chamber of Commerce, Chester Hospital Board, Chester County School Board, Chester Zoning Commission, Chester Sewer District, and the boards of BB&T and First Citizens Bank; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize the Underwood family and its contributions to Chester and the State of South Carolina, and wish them very success at their family reunion. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate recognize the many contributions to this State of the Underwood Family of Chester and extend best wishes to the Underwood family on the occasion of their family reunion.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Underwood family.
