TO COMMEND RICHLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE ON ITS THIRTY YEARS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE HIGHLY ACCLAIMED "READING IS FUNDAMENTAL" PROGRAM AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MUCH SUCCESS IN THE DISTRICT'S CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP WITH THIS OUTSTANDING PROGRAM.
Whereas, Richland School District One will soon observe its thirtieth anniversary as a multi-site partner with the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program. On Saturday, May 11, the district's twenty-five participating schools will sponsor a fun-filled celebration to mark the RIF program's long-standing contributions to student literacy development; and
Whereas, the celebration is being held to conclude Reading Is Fundamental Week, which is being observed nationally to commemorate the work of Margaret McNamara, who founded RIF in Washington, D.C. in 1966; and
Whereas, Reading Is Fundamental is the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit children's literacy organization, serving millions of young people annually. RIF helps children become strong, enthusiastic readers by giving them access to books they choose and keep, engaging them in creative activities that promote reading, motivating older children to read regularly, and involving parents and community volunteers in children's reading and learning experiences; and
Whereas, Richland District One continues to be a distinguished partner of RIF; it is one of the largest multi-site projects in the nation, is the recipient of the State Attorneys General Classroom Lending Project, and has been featured nationally in RIF Net, RIF's national staff development project. The district continues to have outstanding participation in RIF's many special activities, such as the National Poster Contest and National Reading Celebration; and
Whereas, through local support from the Richland District One School Board Commissioners, the district's RIF project is able to purchase thousands of new books each year for distribution to the eleven thousand students in grades K-12 who are served by RIF; Richland District One recognizes the substantial benefits RIF provides to its students and the positive opportunity it creates for the community to interact with its youth; and
Whereas, Richland District One is very proud of its association with Reading Is Fundamental and commends the Office of Instructional Technology Services, the school based RIF sponsors, and many RIF volunteers for their dedication and hard work in providing this valuable resource to the students and families of the Richland One community for the past thirty years. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Richland School District One on its thirty years of participation in the highly acclaimed "Reading Is Fundamental" program and express best wishes for much success in the district's continuing the partnership with this outstanding program.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Ida W. Thompson, Director of the Instructional Technology Services and the District Reading Is Fundamental Coordinator.
