The Senate assembled at 12:00 Noon, the hour to which it stood adjourned, and was called to order by the PRESIDENT.

A quorum being present, the proceedings were opened with a devotion by the Chaplain as follows:

Beloved, as we remember, and give thanks for the life and labors of Martin Luther King, Jr., hear words from the Apostle Peter (I Peter 2:16-17):

"As servants of God... honor all men...

Love the brotherhood... fear God..."
Let us pray.

Father, You made and loved us all.

Help us to love You in such a way that our love for You will overflow and embrace our sisters and brothers wherever they are.

You gave our brother, Martin, a dream that he shared with the world, the dream that "someday" all mankind would sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

Father, we know we are paying a terrible price for not sharing, in reality, that dream.

Help us to recall and react upon that old hymn we learned in kindergarten:

"Red and yellow, black and white,

They are precious in His sight."
Amen.

The PRESIDENT called for Petitions, Memorials, Presentments of Grand Juries and such like papers.

Remarks by Chaplain Meetze

Thank you very kindly.

Senator FAIR, much is being said about the separation of church and state. For a long time I've held something in my heart that I've had no opportunity to say publicly. That is this - that on the basis of the life that I've been able to live, by the grace of God in the church and in this State, one thing troubles me - that is the Achilles Heel in the body politic of the United States of America. Many of us believe in our hearts that the ultimate of society is the Kingdom of God where Jesus Christ becomes all in all. The Constitution won't let me say that. I won't go into that. But, in my own heart, I've found the place where church and state unite and that is in the heart of the believer. Check me out on that. God bless you all and thank you for this wonderful gift of Bibles.
