A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE DISTINGUISHED AND DEDICATED SERVICE OF MR. WILLIAM H. ALFORD OF MYRTLE BEACH, IN HORRY COUNTY, AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA PUBLIC SERVICE AUTHORITY (SANTEE COOPER).

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with admiration the dedication to his community and State that led to the service of Mr. William H. Alford as a director of the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper); and

Whereas, Mr. Alford's service on that vital board is a recognition that his home county of Horry represents the source of eighty-four percent of Santee Cooper's commercial and residential revenue; and

Whereas, during his tenure, he performed yeoman service in initiatives now underway that will benefit the people of this State for generations to come, including:

dedicating resources for the Regional Task Force to Restore the Waccamaw River;

support for a national and international trade and convention center;

dedicating funds for the North Eastern Strategic Alliance, a multi-county public initiative to share resources and enhance governmental leadership;

an expanded relationship between Santee Cooper and Coastal Carolina University via the four-community resource centers at the University; and

dedicating resources to create a regional industry council comprised of all area public utilities to support tourism and initiatives for job creation along the South Carolina coast; and

Whereas, his stint on the Santee Cooper Board is merely one of a host of acts of community and public service to which Mr. Alford has dedicated his life, including, but by no means limited to, service as chairman of the Horry County Higher Education Commission, as chairman of the South Carolina Commission on Highways and Public Transportation, as president of the Coastal Carolina Alumni Association, as a member of the Educational Task Force of South Carolina, as a chairman of the Council of Myrtle Beach Area Organizations, and as a chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center; and

Whereas, his service and dedication to his community and State have earned him numerous prestigious awards and much recognition, including the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, the Myrtle Beach Citizen of the Year, the Conway American Legion Outstanding Community Service Award, the Department of Highways and Public Transportation Distinguished Service Award, and the Coastal Carolina University Alumnus of the Year, and many, many other honors; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might add their voices to those expressing appreciation for the distinguished community and public service by this son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That by this resolution, the members of the General Assembly express their appreciation for the distinguished and dedicated public service of Mr. William H. Alford of Myrtle Beach, in Horry County, as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper).
