A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY OF MR. CORDES "CODY" PALMER, SR., OF SUMTER WHO DIED DURING THE LEGISLATIVE INTERIM AND TO MEMORIALIZE HIS GOOD WORKS AND GENEROSITY TO THE PEOPLE OF SUMTER COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives recognize and share in the Palmer family's grief at the loss of Mr. Cordes "Cody" Palmer, Sr., who died December 24, 2003, at age eighty-three and honor him for his contributions to the citizens of Sumter County; and

Whereas, born September 4, 1920, in Sumter, South Carolina, Cody Palmer went on to make his family proud by graduating from The Citadel and serving his country in World War II; and

Whereas, after returning home from the war, he began working for Palmer & Mallard & Associates, Inc., a surveying firm founded by his father in 1907, and by 1953, Mr. Palmer was one of the organizers of the South Carolina Society of Land Surveyors; and

Whereas, while serving as president of the South Carolina Society of Land Surveyors from 1964-1966, he also served on the board of Central Carolina Technical College and eventually was named chairman emeritus; and

Whereas, known in the community for providing summer employment for local college and high school students, Cody Palmer was continuously giving back to the citizens of Sumter County; and

Whereas, he was named Humanitarian of the Year by the local Young Men's Christian Association and in whatever activity he undertook, he always acted with graciousness and optimism; and

Whereas, an avid golfer, he could not keep away from the links for long, even playing weekly while receiving dialysis treatments three times a week; and

Whereas, Cody Palmer was a beloved family man and member of the Sumter community who never gave up in the face of adversity and continued to live each day with a kind word and a smile; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family of this truly outstanding man upon his death. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Cordes "Cody" Palmer, Sr., of Sumter who died during the legislative interim and memorialize his good works and generosity to the people of Sumter County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. Cordes "Cody" Palmer, Sr.
