A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR RECEIVING THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL KENNEDY CENTER ALLIANCE FOR ARTS EDUCATION NETWORK (KCAAEN) AND NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION (NSBA) AWARD FOR THEIR CONTINUOUS SUPPORT OF THE ARTS IN EDUCATION.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives recognize the importance of arts education programs in South Carolina schools and believe that the children of the Palmetto State are greatly benefited by the implementation of such programs; and

Whereas, the Beaufort County School District received the fifteenth annual Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) and National School Boards Association (NSBA) Award for its outstanding support of high-quality arts education and as a recipient of the 2003 School Board Award for Excellence in Arts Education, the Beaufort County School District has obtained unprecedented success in the arts education field; and

Whereas, since 1989 the School Board Award for Excellence in Arts Education has nationally recognized thirty-three school boards in twenty-three states for their support of arts education and the Board of Education of Beaufort County has now joined this esteemed rank; and

Whereas, as a winner of the 2003 award, the Beaufort County School District reflects an extraordinary commitment on the part of the school board, superintendent, principals, faculty, and community leaders to provide opportunities for their students to study the arts as part of a comprehensive education; and

Whereas, the recipients of the national award must demonstrate support for all four artistic disciplines in their arts education program including visual arts, music, theater and dance, and instruction and programming must be available to all students throughout the district; and

Whereas, the national review panel also considers the ways in which the school district develops collaborative partnerships with the cultural resources available in the community; and

Whereas, the Board of Education of Beaufort County School District provides strong financial support to the arts, allocating a significant amount of its total instructional budget to arts education programs, and there are eighty-six full-time and eight part-time arts teachers employed by the Board as well as a full-time district arts supervisor; and

Whereas, highlights of the district's commitment to arts education include the School Board Goal for the Arts, dedicated arts facilities, ninety-four arts specialists, enhanced high school arts diplomas, and a capital and consumable arts budget; and

Whereas, the district also supports an Artist in Education Program, an Artistically Gifted and Talented Program, strong community partnerships and has been an active member of the Kennedy Center Partners in Education with the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina since 1992; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of citizens, committed to arts education, and is extremely proud of the Board of Education of Beaufort County School District's achievement in making the arts an important and enlightening part of the education for our children. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize the Board of Education of Beaufort County School District for receiving the fifteenth annual Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) and National School Boards Association (NSBA) Award for their continuous support of the arts in education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Board of Education of Beaufort County School District.
