A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE CITY OF COLUMBIA AND THE THREE RIVERS MUSIC FESTIVAL ORGANIZATION FOR THE OUTSTANDING JOB THEY HAVE DONE TO FOSTER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM IN THE MIDLANDS THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF THE THREE RIVERS MUSIC FESTIVAL EACH SPRING.

Whereas, the Three Rivers Music Festival was started in 2000 in an effort to bring tourism and economic growth to both the Midlands and to South Carolina as a whole, and it has become the premier spring event for the Midlands area; and

Whereas, scheduled for April 16-18, 2004, the Three Rivers Music Festival is a major economic engine for the South Carolina Tourism Industry, with attendance last year exceeding one hundred thousand people from across a fifty mile radius; and

Whereas, of the over one hundred thousand participants, sixty-one percent ate in a Columbia restaurant, and the number of festival goers staying overnight in local hotels has tripled; and

Whereas, those who attend the Three Rivers Music Festival are diverse in age and ethnicity, with seventy-three percent between the ages of twenty-two and fifty-five years old, and minority attendance has continued to grow through the variety of acts selected for mass public appeal; and

Whereas, the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the organizers of this fine event for making such a valuable contribution not only to Columbia and the surrounding communities but also to the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the City of Columbia and the Three Rivers Music Festival organization for the outstanding job they have done to foster economic development and tourism in the Midlands through the presentation of the Three Rivers Music Festival each spring.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the City of Columbia and the Three Rivers Music Festival organization.
