A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE AWARD-WINNING RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL GOSPEL AND PRAISE CHOIR FOR ITS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL GOSPEL COMPETITIONS AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO THE MEMBERS IN ALL OF THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, being a member of a gospel choir allows young people to showcase their artistic and musical abilities while giving them the opportunity to work together as a team to achieve a common goal; and

Whereas, to become a champion choir, all members must have outstanding vocal and musical abilities as well as an unique insight into the world of music as a whole; and

Whereas, the members of the Richland Northeast High School Gospel and Praise (GAP) Choir have received many awards for excellence and have taken the gospel world by storm; and

Whereas, having most recently competed in the 2004 Black Music Caucus' School Gospel Choir Competition, the Richland Northeast GAP Choir received an unprecedented five awards including Most Outstanding Percussionist, Most Outstanding Accompaniment, Most Outstanding Processional, Most Outstanding Choreography, and Second Most Outstanding Choir; and

Whereas, the School Gospel Choir Competition, held in Brooklyn, New York, was an international competition featuring schools from around the globe, and the Richland Northeast GAP Choir placed second overall, making them the second best high school choir in the world; and

Whereas, this award brings international recognition to the choir, Richland Northeast High School, and Richland School District Two, as well as to the Palmetto State as a whole; and

Whereas, in addition to their five awards at the Black Music Caucus' School Gospel Choir Competition, the Richland Northeast GAP Choir has also won first place in the National Gospel Artist Showcase Semi-Finals at Bethel AME Church in Columbia and first place at the National Gospel Artist Showcase Finals in Atlanta, Georgia; and

Whereas, winning first place in the Carolina Gospel Expo, sponsored by the national award-winning Benedict College Gospel Choir, the Richland Northeast GAP Choir went on to take first place in the NAACP Invitational Gospel Competition; and

Whereas, the Richland Northeast GAP Choir began as a club called the Guaranteed Adolescent Program at Dent Middle School in 1997 and grew out of that club under the advisement of Mrs. Irma Lowman and Mr. Cyril Belton and director, David Carmichael; and

Whereas, when the members of the club were promoted to Richland Northeast High School, the club followed them and was established by Mrs. Ava Doby and director, Victoria Bartley, and when Mrs. Doby left the school, Ms. Joyce Abel took over as advisor and Landrum Rush-Washington joined as a director; and

Whereas, during the 2002-2003 school year, the name of the choir was changed to the Gospel and Praise Choir and William Huggins was also added as a director under the advisement of Ms. Joyce Abel; and

Whereas, the Richland Northeast GAP Choir is undeniably one of the best high school gospel choirs in the nation, and South Carolina is proud to have these young individuals representing the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the members of the Richland Northeast High School Gospel and Praise Choir for its outstanding achievements in local and international gospel competitions and extend best wishes to the members in all of their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Richland Northeast High School GAP Choir.
