A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF REVEREND LEANDER WEST, JR., AS HE APPROACHES HIS FOURTEENTH ANNIVERSARY AS PASTOR OF MOUNT ZION BAPTIST CHURCH IN BLYTHEWOOD, AND TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR HIS LEADERSHIP, GUIDANCE, AND DEDICATION.

Whereas, Reverend Leander West, Jr., was born July 30, 1954, to the late Mary Pate and Leander West; and

Whereas, upon graduation from Kinston High School in Kinston, North Carolina, Reverend West entered the United States Navy where he valiantly served for four years before answering the call to the Christian ministry; and

Whereas, upon his call to the ministry, Reverend West returned to Kinston to attend Lenoir Community College and then transferred to Columbia Bible College in Columbia, where he received a degree in Biblical Education; and

Whereas, Reverend West also attended Morris College School of Religion in Sumter and went on to receive a degree in nursing from Midlands Technical College to aid in fulfilling the needs of the sick; and

Whereas, Reverend West was installed as the tenth pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Blythewood on October 21, 1990, and has enthusiastically and devotedly ministered to the congregation for the past fourteen years; and

Whereas, under his leadership, Mount Zion has prospered, and Reverend West's progressive ministry has fostered countless programs within the church including telephone services, counseling, pew and carpet replacements, creation of church bylaws and a constitution, and the establishment of programs such as a Bible study group, Junior Usherboard, a youth department, and a First Aide Society; and

Whereas, Reverend West has two children, Brian and Bianca, and strives in his faith to enhance the growth of membership not only within his church, but also within the Christian faith; and

Whereas, Reverend West will celebrate his fourteenth anniversary as pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church on June 13, 2004; and

Whereas, as a shepherd, mentor, and confidante, Reverend Leander West, Jr., is truly a unique individual who selflessly gives to others, and for this he deserves much recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Reverend Leander West, Jr., as he approaches his fourteenth anniversary as Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Blythewood, and express appreciation for his leadership, guidance, and dedication.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Leander West, Jr., Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Blythewood.
