A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE ENNIS BRYANT, SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR FOR LEE COUNTY, UPON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AS A TEACHER, COACH, AND ADMINISTRATOR FOR SOUTH CAROLINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build a sense of togetherness and developing young minds in their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those who teach and to encourage these individuals who continue to inspire children year after year; and

Whereas, a native of North Carolina, Ennis Bryant came to Bishopville, South Carolina in 1969, hoping to earn an advanced degree in public health administration from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the son of Annie Grant Bryant of Clinton, North Carolina, Mr. Bryant earned his masters of art degree in Health Administration in 1974, which he earned while he taught and coached in the Lee County School District; and

Whereas, due to a limited job market in the public health administration field, Mr. Bryant made the decision to stay in Bishopville because he noticed that the students there were not being pushed to continue on to higher education and college; and

Whereas, after working in big cities such as Washington, D.C. and New York City, Mr. Bryant also decided to stay in Bishopville because he liked the rural atmosphere and after serving a short period as an assistant principal at West Florence High School, Mr. Bryant returned to Bishopville High School, where he remained until consolidation in 2000; and

Whereas, as an assistant principal at Bishopville High School in the mid 1990's, Mr. Bryant became a beloved fixture within the school, becoming the only African American to serve as principal of Bishopville High School; and

Whereas, due to school consolidation, Mr. Bryant was the last principal of Bishopville High School and the first principal of the newly formed Lee Central High School, and he has been serving as a district administrator in the Lee County schools since 2001; and

Whereas, as an assistant football coach in 1972, Bishopville High School won a state title in football and in 1979, Mr. Bryant was the head coach of the basketball team when the school won a state championship in basketball; and

Whereas, a member of the Bishopville City Council since 1991, Mr. Bryant is also a member of the Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, various foundations and boards, including First Citizens Bank and CareSouth, and is currently serving as the vice-chairman of his church's Board of Deacons; and

Whereas, married to Merdis Bryant, together they have one son, Ennis, Jr., and he has influenced not only his son's life but also the lives of countless other students, and his presence in the Lee County school system will be sorely missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Ennis Bryant, School District Administrator for Lee County, upon his retirement after thirty-five years as a teacher, coach, and administrator for South Carolina public schools and extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Ennis Bryant of Bishopville.
