A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION ON THE LAUNCH OF THE VERB PROGRAM, A CAMPAIGN TO INCREASE POSITIVE ACTIVITY BOTH PHYSICAL AND PRO-SOCIAL AMONG YOUTH THROUGH INFLUENCERS, MEDIA, PARTNERSHIPS, AND COMMUNITY EFFORTS.

Whereas, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention created a healthy movement among youth through a media campaign called "VERB". The goal of the campaign is to maintain and increase physical activities among young people through media, partnerships, and other adult influencer efforts; and

Whereas, VERB is the response to the decline of children in the United States who attend physical education classes daily, the nearly fifty percent of young people who do not regularly engage in vigorous physical activity, and the doubling of the number of overweight young people over the past twenty years, which may be one factor responsible for the emergence of Type Two diabetes; and

Whereas, the objectives of VERB are to maximize involvement in positive activities and decrease time spent being sedentary, to expand the knowledge of options and opportunities for positive activities, and to foster the belief that regular participation in positive activities can lead to a variety of benefits; and

Whereas, Greenville, South Carolina, is one of only nine communities nationally to be selected to help launch the campaign. There will be activities and events in the Greenville area for the next several months promoting physical activity through VERB. On April 8, 2003, the VERB campaign, in sponsorship with Nickelodeon, will host a Wild and Crazy Kids Event in Greenville; and

Whereas, the VERB campaign will provide young people with local programs and events that offer physical activities that will increase the likelihood that the participants will continue to do positive activities and provide memorable experiences for all of those who participate. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate congratulate the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on the launch of the VERB program, a campaign to increase positive activity both physical and pro-social among youth through influencers, media, partnerships, and community efforts.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Reverend Thomas Norman, III, Vice Chair, Clergy Task Force.
