A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-29-230 SO AS TO REQUIRE THAT SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORY MUST BE TAUGHT AS A YEAR-LONG COURSE IN THE EIGHTH GRADE IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL OF THIS STATE, TO REQUIRE THAT SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORY BE TESTED ON THE PALMETTO ACHIEVEMENT CHALLENGE TESTS IN THE EIGHTH GRADE, AND TO REQUIRE THAT SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT AND SOCIAL STUDIES BE TAUGHT FOR ONE SEMESTER IN THE SEVENTH GRADE IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL OF THIS STATE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Chapter 29, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-29-230.    (A)(1)    Each eighth grade student in a public school of this State must be taught a year-long course in South Carolina history. The South Carolina history course must include instruction in:

(a)    the reconstruction period; and

(b)    the civil rights movement.

(2)    South Carolina history must be tested on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests in the eighth grade.

(B)    Each seventh grade student in a public school of this State must be taught a semester-long course in South Carolina government and social studies.

(C)    The State Board of Education shall provide for the manner in which the provisions of subsections (A) and (B) are implemented."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
