A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MS. JANNIE M. HARRIOT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ALLENDALE COUNTY FIRST STEPS PARTNERSHIP, FOR HER DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF PUBLIC SERVICE UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY AND ENJOYABLE RETIREMENT.

Whereas, those who give their entire lives to the betterment of their individual communities deserve to be publicly recognized for their outstanding contributions in making the State as a whole a better place to live; and

Whereas, Ms. Jannie M. Harriot is such a person, devoting her near forty-year career to public service, having served in numerous capacities for the benefit of families and the education of their children; and

Whereas, born in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the late James Harriot and the late Marvell Bradley Harriot, Jannie Harriot is one of nine children; and

Whereas, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Fayetteville State University and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina and Montclair State College, Jannie has passed on her extensive knowledge and love for business as an educator in North and South Carolina public schools and as an adjunct professor at several New Jersey colleges; and

Whereas, Ms. Harriot possesses an abundant heart for at-risk teens and troubled families, and has served as the project director for both the Butler Heritage Foundation, purposed in preventing teen pregnancy, and the Society Hill Neighborhood Council, a family intervention services project which served more than 190 families during her two-year directorship; and

Whereas, a truly remarkable grant writer, she has captured incredible funding for numerous community organizations, including JMH Professional Services, the Darlington County Community Action Team, Voorhees College, and the City of Denmark; and

Whereas, unafraid to confront serious issues head-on, Ms. Harriot has helped countless unwed teen mothers find childcare so they could finish school, has worked to develop and implement strategies to reduce infant mortality rates, and has educated young mothers on the importance of proper health care during pregnancy and post-delivery; and

Whereas, most recently, she has served as Executive Director of the Allendale County First Steps Partnership, pouring herself into her work in the realization of the impact that the program makes on the Allendale community and in the lives of the individual families it serves; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the General Assembly laud Ms. Jannie M. Harriot on her fine work within this State and Nation, and speak with a single voice for the countless others whose lives have benefited from her kindness, strength, and unfailing wisdom. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Ms. Jannie M. Harriot, Executive Director of the Allendale County First Steps Partnership, for her distinguished career of public service upon the occasion of her retirement and extend to her best wishes for a happy and enjoyable retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Jannie M. Harriot.
