VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO PROUDLY HONOR BRIGADIER GENERAL J. EMORY MACE, USA (RETIRED), COMMANDANT OF CADETS OF THE CITADEL, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AND TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS HE HAS MADE TO THIS FINE MILITARY INSTITUTION.
Whereas, Brigadier General J. Emory Mace was appointed commandant of The Citadel in 1997 several months after The Citadel admitted its first class of women cadets; and
Whereas, his leadership during a dramatic period of transition from an all-male to a coeducational Corps of Cadets proved invaluable to the school as it adjusted to the change; and
Whereas, Brigadier General Mace's own beloved daughter, Nancy Mace, became The Citadel's first female graduate in 1999; and
Whereas, under his able leadership and watchful eye, ninety-five women have graduated from the cadet program and currently the 1900-member Corps of Cadets includes about one hundred twenty women; and
Whereas, in addition to spearheading the evolution of The Citadel, he also managed to strengthen and improve military training at the institution; and
Whereas, he instituted tougher physical fitness requirements of the Corps resulting in ninety-seven percent of all cadets passing the Army Physical Fitness Test; and
Whereas, during his tenure, Brigadier General Mace improved leadership training, security, and discipline in the barracks; enhanced human affairs training; expanded participation in the cadet community service program; added requirements to the daily schedule to include mandatory breakfast and Saturday Morning Inspection; and worked to improve the overall relationship between the Corps of Cadets and those cadets on varsity athletic teams; and
Whereas, among his many accomplishments, he also developed a system of better accountability for academic requirements with an automated class absence system and he managed to decrease freshman attrition to a record low of fourteen percent for the 2004-2005 academic year; and
Whereas, Brigadier General Mace was a member of The Citadel's Class of 1963 and is one of the school's most highly decorated veterans; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to recognize the leadership and many and varied contributions of Brigadier General J. Emory Mace, the longest-serving Commandant of Cadets in the history of The Citadel. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, proudly honor Brigadier General J. Emory Mace, USA (Retired), Commandant of Cadets of The Citadel, upon the occasion of his retirement and recognize the contributions he has made to this fine military institution.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Brigadier General J. Emory Mace.
