A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE FRIENDS OF HUNTING ISLAND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO THE FURTHERANCE OF THE BEAUFORT COMMUNITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE MEMBERS ON WINNING THE IMPRESSIVE 2006 CIVITAS AWARD FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE FROM THE BEAUFORT COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Whereas, the Friends of Hunting Island organization faithfully serves over 1.2 million local, regional, national, and international visitors to Hunting Island State Park each year; and

Whereas, active in improving the habitat for endangered loggerhead turtles in the park, Friends of Hunting Island have conducted the endangered loggerhead turtle rescue program daily from May until September for the past thirteen years. The organization's exceptional efforts have greatly improved the hatch rate of turtle eggs and have been an integral part in the long-term survival of the turtles; and

Whereas, members of the organization serve in a variety of capacities at the park. They assist in the acquisition of funding for beach re-nourishment and groins construction; serve as tour guides and lecturers for the lighthouse and visitors center; build and maintain walking trails, boardwalks, and benches; and contribute to the funding for the expansion and outfitting of the nature center's classroom, among many other worthwhile projects; and

Whereas, comprised of passionate, hard-working individuals, the Friends of Hunting Island organization is fortunate to have members with extensive executive and management skills and a core of volunteers committed to the preservation of Hunting Island State Park; and

Whereas, on April 20, 2006, the group was recognized by the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce for its service to the Beaufort Community in receiving the Civitas Award for Business Excellence. The award recognizes "a private, nonprofit organization that demonstrates enhancement of the quality of life and betterment of the community, contributes a balance of time, expertise and funding to those it serves, meets an identified community need, and serves locally, regionally, or nationally with a local or regional presence"; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is proud to honor the Friends of Hunting Island for their incredible contributions to the park and to the local community and is certain that the members will continue to give of themselves in immeasurable ways in the coming years for the benefit of the great State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the Friends of Hunting Island for their outstanding commitment to the furtherance of the Beaufort community, and congratulate the members on winning the impressive 2006 Civitas Award for Business Excellence from the Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jeff Atkins, Hunting Island park manager.
