COMMENDING DR. JOHN L. CARSON FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE AS THE THIRTEENTH PRESIDENT OF ERSKINE COLLEGE AND SEMINARY DURING THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, AND WISHING HIM AND HIS FAMILY WELL AS HE LEAVES ERSKINE CONTINUING TO FOLLOW GOD'S CALLING.

Whereas, with mixed emotions, the members of the Senate have learned that Dr. John L. Carson is resigning from his position as President of Erskine College and Seminary on June 30, 2005; and

Whereas, Dr. Carson is married to the former Sarah Ellen Patrick, a fellow E. B. Kennedy Scholar and 1967 Erskine College graduate. They are the loving parents to four Erskine College graduates, and have four wonderful grandchildren; and

Whereas, in 1973 Dr. Carson received a Master of Divinity degree from the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and in 1988 received a Ph.D. degree from Aberdeen University in Scotland; and

Whereas, a former member of the Erskine Theological Seminary faculty, Dr. Carson was also an Associate Reformed Presbyterian pastor before becoming president of Erskine in June, 1998. He was serving as pastor of the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, when he received the call to Erskine; and

Whereas, he has served on many boards and committees and as Moderator of the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, was chairman of the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council in 1991, and was Program Chairman for the Westminster Assembly 350th Commemoration. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and co-editor of To Glorify and Enjoy God, published in 1994; and

Whereas, under Dr. Carson's leadership, Erskine has enjoyed record enrollment increases in both the college and seminary; has completed major campus improvements, including the renovation of all residence halls, the endowment has grown from $25.7 million to $42.7 million; and has launched the largest capital campaign in its history; and

Whereas, Erskine's Gold Campaign is the biggest fund-raising venture of Dr. Carson's presidency, and with two years remaining, the campaign goal is three-fourths complete, with over $27.4 million raised toward a goal of $36.8 million. In furtherance of Erskine's commitment to Christian Commitment and Excellence in Learning, Dr. Carson vows to continue work on the campaign until its completion; and

Whereas, Dr. Carson's vision and accomplishments will continue to pay dividends for Erskine College and Seminary well into the future and the members of the Senate would like to publicly thank Dr. Carson for his exemplary service as President. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
