A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE BURNING MAGNETOS ROBOTICS TEAM, OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, ON ITS FIRST-PLACE FINISH IN THE 2007 NATIONAL FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION.

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to note that the Burning Magnetos robotics team, of Dorchester County, captured first place in the 2007 National FIRST Robotics Competition; and

Whereas, a unique varsity sport of the mind, the FIRST Robotics Competition is designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the lives of engineers and researchers can be; and

Whereas, combining the excitement of sport with science and technology, the competition stages short games played by remote-controlled robots that are designed and built in six weeks by a team of fifteen to twenty-five high school students and a handful of engineers serving as mentors; and

Whereas, participating students, showing their skill at piloting the robots on the field, move through regional competitions to the national level to compete for the top prize and other awards; and

Whereas, in the process of preparing for and competing in FIRST Robotics Competition events, these young people learn the value of teamwork and the role of science and technology in everyday life; increase their self-confidence, their motivation to do well in school, and their interest in serving others; and enjoy a fun-filled, engaging experience that offers opportunities to take on real responsibilities; and

Whereas, the Burning Magnetos robotics team members, sponsored by Robert Bosch Corporation, Dorchester County Council, and Trident Technical College, have proven their mettle as national champions by winning three Best Sportsmanship awards and saving educational lives through bringing Project Lead the Way to their schools and supporting it with over four hundred thousand dollars' worth of equipment. In partnership with Robert Bosch Corporation, they have helped create nine scholarships for the company's apprenticeship program and have also partnered with Trident Technical College to fund six thousand dollars in scholarships for former team members; and

Whereas, in addition, team members speak to many groups each year about the FIRST program and inspire numerous young people to consider careers in engineering, thus helping fellow teens discover a rewarding and profitable career pathway they might not otherwise have found. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Burning Magnetos robotics team, of Dorchester County, on its first-place finish in the 2007 National FIRST Robotics Competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Burning Magnetos robotics team.
