A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE TOWN OF GASTON ON THE OCCASION OF THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GASTON COLLARD FESTIVAL AND TO WISH ITS RESIDENTS MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL THEIR FUTURE CELEBRATIONS.

Whereas, the Collard Festival began its reign in Gaston, South Carolina twenty-five years ago and has put Gaston into the local, state, and national spotlight for its unique celebration of this nutritional green, leafy vegetable; and

Whereas, Gaston, whose first settlers date back to the prerevoluntionary 1700s, was incorporated into Lexington County on December 28, 1894, and is one of the fastest growing residential areas in southern Lexington County. Over the past century Gaston has seen extraordinary growth and development, and yet throughout Gaston's history, farming has had a continuous presence; and

Whereas, representative of Gaston's farming history, collards, quite naturally, became the centerpiece for a community celebration, thereby giving birth to the Gaston Collard Festival; and

Whereas, collards, having come to the South by way of African Slaves cooking on plantations, are common to southern gardens, and southern kitchens and would not dare be omitted from a Southern New Year's day menu to ensure prosperity and wealth for the coming year; and

Whereas, on September 7-8, 2007, Gaston once again will welcome all to the Annual Gaston Collard Festival featuring a parade, beauty pageants, rides and games, live entertainment, crafts, cake and cookie decorating contests, a photography contest; and a live auction; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to recognize Gaston, South Carolina and its contributions to keeping alive southern traditions and bringing wholesome family fun to all of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate the Town of Gaston on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Gaston Collard Festival and to wish its residents much success in all their future celebrations.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Town of Gaston.
