VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WOODRUFF HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY WRESTLING TEAM, OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE WRESTLERS AND THEIR COACHES FOR SUCCESS IN CAPTURING THE 2008 CLASS AA UPPER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, thrilling their fans and stunning their rivals, the Woodruff High School Wolverines finished their season on the mats with nineteen wins and only two losses; and
Whereas, on February 6, 2008, the Woodruff High School Wolverine wrestling team defeated the Broome High School Centurions 35-28 to win the upper state championship after fourteen matches with their opponents; and
Whereas, nine matches into the play off, Broome High School led 22-15, but the Wolverines had yet to compete in the 103-pound weight class, where they are strongest; and
Whereas, Akierrian Gilliam beat his Broome opponent 19-4, and Jeremy Phillips and Richie Flynn pinned both of their Centurion matches to complete the Wolverine victory; and
Whereas, in a sport requiring individual athleticism, strategy, and mental fortitude, the Woodruff coaches used their athletic skills and experience to forge a winning team through grueling practices and arduous effort; and
Whereas, the Woodruff High School wrestlers have competed successfully to finish a winning season and have brought pride to their school and community in capturing the 2008 Upper State Championship title. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Woodruff High School varsity wrestling team, of Spartanburg County, for an outstanding season, and congratulate the wrestlers and their coaches for success in capturing the 2008 Class AA Upper State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Woodruff High School Principal Karen Neal and Coach Daniel Westmoreland.
