VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE MR. AND MRS. JOHN HENRY HOLLADAY, JR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF BLESSING AND FULFILLMENT TOGETHER.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to acknowledge that Laura and John Holladay, Jr., will celebrate fifty years of wedded fidelity at a gala at Fort Jackson given by their children to honor them on March 29, 2008; and
Whereas, John Holladay was born in Darlington County, the son of the late Ruth Slanders and John Henry Holladay, Sr. His loving wife Laura Johnstone, born in Orangeburg County, is the daughter of the late Sallie Thrasher and Johnnie Ray Johnstone; and
Whereas, when iris began blooming their gentle spring colors, Laura L. Johnstone and John Holladay were united in holy matrimony in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 28, 1958; and
Whereas, a Golden Gloves boxer in high school, John continued boxing throughout college and was the Army light- heavyweight champion and even boxed professionally after college; and
Whereas, John had attended Wofford College before he entered the Army during World War II, where he graduated from aviation cadet school as a flight officer in the Army Air Corps, and later transferred to the Infantry in the Mediterranean Theatre; and
Whereas, in 1951, he graduated from the University of South Carolina, and he and Laura remain avid Gamecock fans, even donating to a scholarship fund there for more than thirty years; and
Whereas, John was a senior executive in legislative affairs with South Carolina National Bank and retired after twenty-seven years of faithful service there; and
Whereas, his efforts brought the Boxing Commission into existence in South Carolina, which later became the state's Athletic Commission; and
Whereas, John has written three books, and Toothpick, the story of a boxer which he co-authored, has been published. His artistic talents also include acting in local plays; and
Whereas, Laura attended business school and has retired as a bookkeeper and office manager; her artistic gifts and enjoyment include oil painting, designing flower gardens, and sewing; and
Whereas, she served many years as a softball coach and leader in the Girl Scouts and participated in local women's and garden clubs, and currently plays United States Tennis Association team tennis; and
Whereas, Laura always maintained a keen interest in current health issues, which she researched to benefit her family who enjoy uncommonly good health and fitness, and together she and John still work out daily at their local fitness center; and
Whereas, while raising four fine children, John M. Holladay, Linda H. Kennedy, Judith H. Bledsoe, and Jennifer H. Hydrick, Laura and John served as officers or participating members in the school Parent Teacher Association. They have been blessed with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well; and
Whereas, John and Laura participate actively in civic events through Chamber of Commerce functions, and they have been members of Washington Street United Methodist Church for over forty-five years where Laura has served as a Sunday school teacher and John was chairman of the church board in 1969; and
Whereas, John has learned the veracity of Proverbs 18:22 (KJV), "Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord," and he considers one of his crowning achievements as having had the good sense to marry his cherished Laura; and
Whereas, since no success authenticates a life as does a marriage that endures the test of time and grows stronger with each passing year, this golden anniversary reflects the genuine character of their lives intertwined in caring and faithfulness to their family, their community, and their church. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Holladay, Jr., of Richland County, on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and extend to them best wishes for many more years of blessing and fulfillment together.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Holladay, Jr.
