A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF MR. JACOB RICHARDSON OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Jacob Richardson of Beaufort County on February 24, 2008, at the venerable age of eighty-four; and

Whereas, a native of Colleton County, Mr. Richardson was born November 23, 1923, and was graduated from Robert Smalls High School in 1942. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, where he met his wife, Ellen Allgood Richardson. They were married in 1952; and

Whereas, answering the call of his country, he served in the United States Navy. His first job as an educator in Beaufort County took him to Penn Center and the former St. Helena High School from 1951 to 1962. Moving from teaching to administration, he served from 1962 to 1973 as principal of Robert Smalls High School, a position he took as Beaufort County School District integrated its students in the early 1960's; and

Whereas, known as a stern educator who demanded attention from his students, he inspired them to stay in school and on track. Mr. Richardson left the district in 1981 after working in its central office for a time; and

Whereas, not one to forget his civic duty, Jacob Richardson served on several boards, including those of the Department of Social Services, the Beaufort Housing Authority, the Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity. He was also a devoted member of First African Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher; and

Whereas, he leaves behind his beloved wife of more than fifty years and four children. He will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mr. Jacob Richardson of Beaufort County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Ellen Richardson for the family.
