TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CALHOUN ACADEMY VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE PLAYERS AND COACHES FOR CAPTURING THE 2008 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn that the Calhoun Academy varsity baseball team won the South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (SCISAA) Class AA State Championship title; and
Whereas, in a 19 and 6 season, the Calhoun Academy Cavaliers were 6 and 0 in their region during the regular season and were undefeated in the playoffs to claim the state title against the Williamsburg Academy Stallions on May 13, 2008, by winning the first two games back to back; and
Whereas, the first state title for the Cavalier varsity baseball team since 1986, this victory was particularly welcome to the players who recalled their loss in the 2006 playoffs against Colleton Preparatory School of Walterboro; and
Whereas, senior centerfield Cavalier Shandon Kemmerlin and junior pitcher Andrew Robinson distinguished themselves this season and were named to the SCISAA All-State Team; and
Whereas, five seniors who have helped to guide the team to a winning season will leave the field this spring, Shandon Kemmerlin, Mack Irick, Korey Davis, David Yenny, and Dean Weeks; and
Whereas, in a sport that requires skill, strength, strategy, and quickness, Coach Adam Jarecki and Assistant Coach Chuck Cuttino used their own athletic ability and experience to forge a championship team and teach the players lessons that have prepared them well for life; and
Whereas, members of the South Carolina General Assembly commend the Calhoun Academy Cavaliers for garnering the 2008 SCISAA State Championship title and wait to hear of future successes from this talented team. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Calhoun Academy varsity baseball team for a successful season, and congratulate the players and coaches for capturing the 2008 South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Class AA State Championship title.
