A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE BEN LIPPEN SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE PLAYERS AND COACHES FOR CAPTURING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION 2008 CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that the Ben Lippen varsity baseball team took the Class 3A State Championship title in the South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association; and

Whereas, with just the right number of singles, sacrifices, and steals, the Ben Lippen Falcons defeated their North Charleston rivals, the Northwood Academy Chargers, in a dramatic 5 to 4 finish to take their first state championship on May 13, 2008; and

Whereas, in January before the season began, the Falcon team got a big league boost from Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jon Coutlangus, who talked and pitched to the Falcons on their own diamond; and

Whereas, in March, the Falcons battled Class 3A Clinton High School in the Sandlapper Invitational Bracket Championship, delighting their fans and disappointing their foes with a 15 to 1 victory; and

Whereas, the ten seniors on the Falcons' lineup led their teammates in a successful 25 and 5 season, and Rick Davis, Colby Edwards, Justin Norris, and Kyle Williamson were named to the North/South All-Star Team. Rick Davis, Colby Edwards, Mobley Jeter, and Blaine Walker have signed to play at the University of South Carolina Lancaster in 2008, and Kyle Williamson at Anderson College; and

Whereas, in a sport requiring skill, strength, and strategy, Coach Brent Walsh and assistant coaches Trey Dyson, Brandon Gunter, Tripp Owings, and Jeff Pruitt used their own athletic ability and experience to forge a championship team through tireless work in demanding practices; and

Whereas, the team's purpose is to challenge young men to reach their potential by putting God and others before themselves, so their motto is, "I am third," a goal which has helped them to place first in the state championship; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the Ben Lippen varsity baseball team for garnering the South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 2008 Class 3A State Championship title and look to hear of future successes from this talented team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Ben Lippen School varsity baseball team, of Richland County, for a successful season, and congratulate the players and coaches for capturing the South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 2008 Class 3A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Les Lehman and Coach Brent Walsh.
