VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE CROSS ROAD MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH, OF THE PROMISED LAND COMMUNITY, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SIXTH ANNIVERSARY, AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, with its earliest history firmly rooted in the initial years of the eighteen hundreds, the Promised Land community's Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church celebrates its historic one hundred twenty-sixth anniversary in 2008; and
Whereas, in the church's early days, worship took place under a "brush arbor," the congregation later moving to the improved shelter of an old cotton gin located about a half mile from the present-day sanctuary. Although denominational differences were present, all the people in the community were united in their desire to have a church where they could serve God and fellowship together; and
Whereas, in 1882, the congregation built a sanctuary and formally named the new facility Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church. With the blessing of the Lord, the church members continued to build and improve their campus; and
Whereas, through the years, Cross Road's pastors and members have held on to their God with a steadfast and unmovable faith, looking to the future and secure in the Lord's love for them; and
Whereas, standing on the faith and strength of its early pastors and members, Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church's present congregation "press[es] toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus," continuing to preach and teach the Word of God; and
Whereas, Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church has served as a beacon of light in its community for more than a century, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage in many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, of the Promised Land community, on the occasion of its historic one hundred twenty-sixth anniversary, and commend the church for more than a century of service to the community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Reverend Joseph R. Caldwell, pastor of Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, for the congregation.
