VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO MR. WILLIAM W. GRANT, JR., FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BEAUFORT COUNTY MEMORIAL DAY COMMITTEE UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THAT POSITION, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives notes with regret that Mr. William W. Grant, Jr., is retiring from the position of chairman of the Beaufort County Memorial Day Committee; and
Whereas, a former Beaufort County councilman and a distinguished veteran, Mr. Grant is a well-respected leader in the Beaufort community, remembered for his work in furthering civil rights and equal opportunity for all Lowcountry residents during the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's. Believing strongly that a man should be involved in serving his community and beyond, he accepted an appointment in 1970 to serve for two years on the Legislative Committee for Hunger and Malnutrition in the South Carolina House of Representatives, and in his work on Beaufort County Council, he was truly a warrior for justice and equality; and
Whereas, during his career, he became director of the Beaufort County Department of Veterans Affairs, from which he retired after many years of committed service; and
Whereas, he co-founded and served as first board chairman of the Beaufort-Jasper Comprehensive Health Services and organized and developed the first center for developmentally disabled children in the Lowcountry, the James M. Waddell Center. He also co-developed the W. W. Grant, Jr. Adult Activity Center for developmentally disabled adults; and
Whereas, he holds memberships with numerous civic organizations and has received many awards, among them a Ford Foundation Fellowship and listing in Who's Who in America. He was also a recipient of the Beaufort County Association for Retarded Citizens Man of the Year award and, as a disabled veteran of the United States Army, was awarded the Purple Heart; and
Whereas, William Grant and his beloved wife, the former Jonnie Smith, are the proud parents of five children; and
Whereas, upon the occasion of his retirement from the position of chairman of the Beaufort County Memorial Day Committee, it is fitting that the House acknowledge with gratitude the tireless labors of this servant-hearted man. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their gratitude to Mr. William W. Grant, Jr., for his dedicated service as chairman of the Beaufort County Memorial Day Committee upon the occasion of his retirement from that position, and wish him much success and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to William W. Grant, Jr.
