A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE LEXINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FOR ITS LEADERSHIP IN BRINGING TO SOUTH CAROLINA THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL'S "DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE--ALIVE AT 25" PROGRAM, WHICH HAS SAVED SO MANY YOUNG LIVES.

Whereas, in an effort to lessen the number one cause of death for young people aged sixteen to twenty-four, vehicle crashes, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, led by Sheriff James Metts, played an instrumental part in bringing the National Safety Council's "Defensive Driving Course--Alive at 25" program to this great State; and

Whereas, "Alive at 25" is a driver intervention program that helps educate its participants, young people between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four, about safer driving practices, encouraging these young people to take responsibility for their behavior in various driving situations, to be aware of typical driving hazards, and to practice what they learn from the course; and

Whereas, now in its second year in South Carolina, the program has drawn more than six thousand young people to its highly interactive classes, taught by off-duty deputy sheriffs and municipal police officers; and

Whereas, because instructors are law enforcement officers, such as Lexington County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Jim Crawford, whose work was key in establishing the "Alive at 25" program in South Carolina, partnerships have been created with various law enforcement agencies throughout the State. Additional partnerships with South Carolina high schools, corporations, organizations, and the state's judicial system aid the cause, with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department acting as statewide coordinator for the work; and

Whereas, without the support of all these individuals and agencies, particularly that of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, the "Alive at 25" program would not be the success it is today. The House of Representatives gratefully acknowledges the dedicated labors of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department and of all those who have contributed to that success, thereby helping to save many lives. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the Lexington County Sheriff's Department for its leadership in bringing to South Carolina the National Safety Council's "Defensive Driving Course--Alive at 25" program, which has saved so many young lives.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.
