VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REVEREND HARRY ERNEST LAWHON, JR., OF KERSHAW COUNTY, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A PASTOR AND FOR HIS COMMITTED COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina General Assembly honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to succor the souls of men; and
Whereas, the Reverend Harry Ernest Lawhon, Jr., beloved rector of Camden's Grace Episcopal Church from 1961 to 1985, now retired, stands among their number as an outstanding minister of the Gospel, one much admired in his role as both pastor and preacher; and
Whereas, born on November 29, 1918, the son of Harry and Jenifer Lawhon, Reverend Lawhon is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. In preparation for his life's work, he was educated at Birmingham-Southern College, Oklahoma A & M, the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and Virginia Theological Seminary; and
Whereas, known for his thoughtful, personalized prayers, Reverend Lawhon since his retirement has served as a supply minister. A man who believes a priest should be involved in his community beyond the doors of the church, he has long been active in the community, among his activities being his many years as sergeant at arms for the Camden Rotary Club. His community has responded gratefully to his commitment, bestowing on "Pop" Lawhon numerous honors and awards; and
Whereas, before his retirement he served as priest at St. Mark's in Pinewood and Church of the Ascension in Hagood, Reverend Lawhon, during his pastorate at Camden's Grace Episcopal Church, earned, as always, the respect of his congregation and established a relationship of mutual affection and appreciation that continues to this day; and
Whereas, Reverend Lawhon considers one of his crowning achievements as having had the good sense to marry his beloved Josephine, or "Jo," for sixty-eight years his wife and life partner, and with her to raise four beautiful daughters, Helen, Katy, Donna, and Jenifer; and
Whereas, this servant of God, noted as a man of Christian standards and character, strives to manifest Jesus Christ as Lord and to strengthen and renew the Body of Christ in his ministry. "Well done, good and faithful servant" truly expresses the dedicated quality of his life's work. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Reverend Harry Ernest Lawhon, Jr., of Kershaw County, for his many years of dedicated service as a pastor and for his committed community service.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Reverend Lawhon.
