A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE MEMBERS OF THE MU PHI OMEGA CHAPTER OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY ON THE ORGANIZATION'S CELEBRATION OF ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PHILANTHROPIC COMMUNITY SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND BEYOND.

Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., on January 15, 1908; and

Whereas, the oldest Greek-letter organization established by, and for, African-American college-trained women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority over the past one hundred years has earned a reputation as a premiere philanthropic organization in recognition of its community service throughout the United States and the world; and

Whereas, for more than twenty-nine years, the Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Georgetown has promoted education through various activities, including providing books to local schools, libraries, and daycare centers and granting annual scholarships to local students and students enrolled at historically black colleges and universities. In addition, the Mu Phi Omega Chapter sponsors such local and national programs as summer youth events and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome workshops; and

Whereas, the Mu Phi Omega Chapter continues to serve the Georgetown community, schools, and local businesses, always stressing the importance of education through its Partnership in Math and Science program; and

Whereas, in further living out its creed, "supreme in service to all mankind," the Mu Phi Omega Chapter contributes to the Committee for African American History Observance, the Marine Institute, the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, the American Red Cross, the Steel Mill Workers Fund, Adopt-A-Highway, the United Negro College Fund, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, among other organizations; and

Whereas, through its outstanding service program, Mu Phi Omega Chapter has shown itself a worthy participant in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's one-hundred-year tradition of philanthropic giving, and the House of Representatives is pleased to acknowledge its excellence and congratulate the sorority on its centennial celebration. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the members of the Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on the organization's celebration of one hundred years of philanthropic community service throughout the United States and beyond.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
