A JOINT RESOLUTION TO PROVIDE THAT FOR THE PURPOSE OF TEACHER CONTRACTS NEGOTIATED FOR THE 2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR, DATES FOR COMPLETING CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS ARE EXTENDED FOR ONE YEAR.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Completion dates for certain requirements extended
SECTION 1. (A) For the purpose of teacher contracts negotiated for the 2007-2008 school year, the following applies:
Teachers who hold a professional certificate and who have three or more years of experience teaching in middle grades within the past five years on or before July 1, 2009, will be awarded middle level certification in each subject area in which he or she has three or more years of successful experience according to the guidelines for Middle Grades Teacher Education and Certification, adopted by the State Board of Education.
Prior to October 1, 2007, teachers who meet the experience requirement and are adding middle level certification will be exempt from the coursework, subject area exams, and the Principles of Learning and Teaching (middle level test) required for add-on certification in specific middle level areas.
Between October 1, 2007, and July 1, 2009, teachers who meet the experience requirement and are adding middle level certification must pass the applicable subject area exam or exams and the Principles of Teaching and Learning test required by the State Board of Education in order to add subject-specific middle level certification.
Teachers who have a teaching certificate but do not meet the three-year teaching requirement by July 1, 2009, must complete all coursework and examinations required for add-on certification in middle level areas.
(B) The State Board of Education and the Department of Education shall collaborate with school district administrators to review the certification requirements and submit regulation amendments to the General Assembly by January 8, 2008.
Time effective
SECTION 2. This joint resolution takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
