VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE MALACHI COFFEY OF SUMTER, SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO COMMEND HIS HEROIC EFFORTS IN COURAGEOUSLY RESCUING HIS NEIGHBOR.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to recognize nine-year-old Malachi Coffey for his remarkable courage and quick, level headed actions in saving his neighbor's life; and
Whereas, on March 10, 2018, Malachi Coffey came to the rescue of his 65-year-old neighbor, Allen Clemmons, who was pinned under his car for an hour and a half. Barely able to draw breath, Allen had given up when Malachi appeared, but Malachi quickly used a nearby jack to lift the car before running to get help; and
Whereas, although Allen suffered from extensive injuries, he was able to escape with his life. He and Malachi maintained contact while he recovered at the hospital, and the two have since formed a friendship; and
Whereas, Malachi, who wants to be a police officer when he grows up, was honored by the Sumter County Sheriff's Department, which named him a junior deputy for the day and honorary employee of the month and also presented him with a plaque and department memorabilia. He was further honored by the Sumter County Council, which presented him with a trophy and a proclamation naming March 28 as Malachi Coffey Day in Sumter County; and
Whereas, in further recognition of his heroism, Malachi received from Governor Henry McMaster the Order of the Silver Crescent, the State's highest civilian award for significant contributions, leadership, volunteerism, and lifelong influence within a region or community; and
Whereas, a quiet young man with a shy half-smile, Malachi has been surprised by all the attention and honors. In his words, he was simply "doing what he was supposed to do" in helping another citizen; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that Malachi Coffey has brought to his family, his community, and his State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor and recognize Malachi Coffey of Sumter, South Carolina and commend his heroic efforts in courageously rescuing his neighbor.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Malachi Coffey.
