A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE CARVERS BAY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR CAPTURING THE 2018 CLASS AA LOWER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR THE TEAM'S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.

Whereas, fully prepared for the challenge, the Carvers Bay High School boys basketball team added another triumph to an already outstanding season by capturing the 2018 Class AA Lower State Championship title, defeating Marion 58-45 on February 24, 2018, at Florence Civic Center; and

Whereas, in capturing their first Lower State championship in school history, the Bears focused all their knowledge, skill, and determination, took to heart their coaches' exhortations, and came through like the champions they are, making their principal, Dr. Bethany A. Giles (Carvers Bay's first female principal), along with the entire school, mightily proud; and

Whereas, the win also earned Carvers Bay the right to compete for the first time in the state championship, another source of justified pride; and

Whereas, at the Lower State title game, jubilant Carvers Bay fans cheered with excitement as the Bears, with equal doses of heart and hustle, orchestrated a game that gave sports pundits confidence in predicting a repeat performance for 2019; and

Whereas, having honed his players into a championship machine, Head Coach Jeff Mezzatesta saw the fruit of his labors as the title trophy was hoisted; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young men of the Carvers Bay High School boys basketball team for leading with excellence both in the classroom and on the court and expects to hear of continued great achievements in the years ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Carvers Bay High School boys basketball team for capturing the 2018 Class AA Lower State Championship title and honor the team's exceptional players, coaches, and staff.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Bethany A. Giles, principal, and Head Coach Jeff Mezzatesta of Carvers Bay High School.
