VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO SALUTE THE SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THE TEAM'S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACH, AND STAFF ON CAPTURING THE 2018 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, well prepared for the challenge, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) volleyball team powered its way to the 2018 Class A State Championship title, defeating Branchville at Lexington on Saturday, November 10, 2018; and
Whereas, the Lady Eagles brought back the third state championship trophy to be earned by a GSSM team in a year. Facing lower-state champs Branchville High School in the finals, the Lady Eagles were eager to repay Branchville for a loss in the 2016 championship round; and
Whereas, GSSM took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21 from a determined and skilled Branchville squad. High-quality blocking and kills from Branchville kept things close, and unforced Eagle errors gave new life to the Yellow Jackets as they took the third set 23-25. The fourth match was tense early, with lead changes and tight scoring until the Lady Eagles pulled away after an 8-0 streak. They finished off the set and the match 25-17; and
Whereas, with grueling practices, hard work, and commitment, Hugh O'Connor, GSSM's athletics director and interim volleyball coach, built his volleyball program into championship quality and taught these young athletes important lessons that will serve them well, both on and off the court; and
Whereas, the GSSM volleyball team has brought great pride and recognition to its school and community, and the House of Representatives is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such a wonderful group of young women. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics volleyball team for its outstanding season and congratulate the team's exceptional players, coach, and staff on capturing the 2018 Class A State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to President Hector Flores and Coach Hugh O'Connor of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.
