A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LEGACY EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2019 USA PREP NATIONAL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the Legacy Early College basketball team of Greenville County took home the national trophy from the national tournament held on Saturday, March 2, 2019; and

Whereas, to the cheers of their devoted fans, the Legacy Lions took on three competitive teams to capture a national title. In the first round, they defeated Word of God, and in the second round, they overpowered Hillcrest Prep from Arizona 58 to 48; and

Whereas, in the final round the Lions dominated the backboards and pressed their opponent, Teays Valley High School from West Virginia, posting a final score of 55-44 to finish the season with a 34-5 record; and

Whereas, Jalyn McCreary earned 18 points for the Lions and led both teams in scoring, while teammate Kaleb Mack was the driving force, leading the team with 7 assists, and Chase Claxton provided powerful defense; and

Whereas, the Legacy Lions represented the Palmetto State in several national events during the season, such as the Buckeye Elite Showcase in Ohio, Hoopsgiving and the Tournament of Champions in Georgia, the Nike Southeast Hoops Fest in North Carolina, the Governors Challenge in Maryland, and the Phenom Hoops Holiday Classic in South Carolina; and

Whereas, throughout an outstanding season, Legacy Early College defeated a number of nationally ranked teams, including number-5-ranked Huntington Prep from West Virginia and number 23 Hamilton Heights from Tennessee, and the Lions bested number 24 Teays Valley Christian Academy three times; and

Whereas, two Lions have committed to play for college teams, Rodney Howard for Ole Miss and Chase Claxton for Winthrop University; and

Whereas, with a career record of 286-96, Head Coach B. J. Jackson has garnered 200 wins at Legacy Early College, and he has placed twenty-four scholar athletes in Division I, Division II, or junior colleges in the past five years; and

Whereas, in a sport that requires strength, agility, and accuracy, Coach Jackson and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate appreciates the pride and recognition that the Legacy Early College basketball players have brought to their school and their community, and the members look to hear of their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Legacy Early College High School national boys basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an extraordinary season and congratulate them for winning the 2019 USA Prep National Tournament Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal LaCheryl Smith and Coach B. J. Jackson.
