TO CONGRATULATE WILLIE MAE MEEKINS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is delighted to learn that Willie Mae Meekins of Greenville County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on April 29, 2022; and
Whereas, born on April 29, 1922, in the first quarter of the twentieth century, she has witnessed the many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the first quarter of the twenty-first century; and
Whereas, the daughter of Willie and Janie Woods-Golden, she was born in Greenville County; and
Whereas, Mrs. Meekins made history in the Palmetto State as one of the oldest workers to retire from the South Carolina Retirement System, at the age of eighty-seven, showcasing her exemplary work ethic; and
Whereas, without a license or formal training, Mrs. Meekins taught a sort of mathematics through her example, not in a school classroom but in her community, when she added the values of love and hard work to her life, subtracted a can't-do attitude from her mind, multiplied these concepts in her home and community, and divided them among her children; and
Whereas, blessed with good health and strength, Mrs. Meekins worked as a maid at the age of fifteen in 1937 for two and a half dollars a week which she used to help her family. Throughout her working career, she cooked, babysat, cleaned houses, farmed cotton with her husband, and worked in industry and in the public schools of Greenville County to provide for her children, grandchildren, and extended family; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Willie Mae Meekins of Greenville County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Willie Mae Meekins.
