A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE LIEUTENANT MICHAEL CLAYTOR AND LIEUTENANT THOMAS MILLER FOR RECEIVING THE SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFF'S ASSOCIATION MEDAL OF VALOR AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR HEROIC ACTIONS IN THE LINE OF DUTY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to recognize Lieutenant Michael Claytor and Lieutenant Thomas Miller for receiving the South Carolina Sheriff's Association Medal of Valor; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Sheriff's Association Medal of Valor is given to any deputy sheriff who performs actions above and beyond the call of duty and who exhibits exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, and presence of mind, or an unusual swiftness of action, regardless of his or her personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life; and

Whereas, on the night of January 15, 2020, Lieutenant Miller and Lieutenant Claytor pursued a subject in their vehicles and subsequently on foot, through a well-populated residential area. After being fired upon by the subject, the deputies returned fire, striking and disabling him and preventing any further threat to themselves or the community. The subject was found to be in possession of a handgun and rifle and was trafficking heroin and cocaine. Once the subject was down and secure, both deputies rendered aid and got him to a hospital; and

Whereas, Lieutenant Claytor and Lieutenant Miller displayed courage, decisiveness, and presence of mind in protecting their community by reacting swiftly to a life-threatening situation; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to recognize these sons of South Carolina for their outstanding service to their community and the people and State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Lieutenant Michael Claytor and Lieutenant Thomas Miller for receiving the South Carolina Sheriff's Association Medal of Valor and commend them for their heroic actions in the line of duty.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Lieutenant Michael Claytor and Lieutenant Thomas Miller.
