TO DECLARE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2022, AS "STO PROGRAMS DAY" IN THE PALMETTO STATE AND TO ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND BUSINESSES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CONSUMER-FACING PROGRAMS OFFERED AT THE STATE TREASURER'S OFFICE.
Whereas, the State Treasurer's Office administers multiple programs to benefit the citizens of the Palmetto State, and
Whereas, saving for a college education is an important investment in a child's future. As student loan debt continues to increase, South Carolina's Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan currently serves more than 200,000 families with nearly six billion dollars in assets under management; and
Whereas, individuals with disabilities and their families who care for them should have access to the same kinds of savings tools that are available to the broader population. The Palmetto ABLE Savings Program provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to save for their future without losing government benefits; and
Whereas, rightful owners of unclaimed property, or their heirs, always have a right to claim property held in custody by the State Treasurer's Office. The South Carolina Unclaimed Property Program returned $35.3 million last fiscal year and currently has more than $750 million in unclaimed funds available for claim. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, declare Wednesday, April 6, 2022, as "STO Programs Day" in the Palmetto State and encourage individuals, families, and businesses to learn more about the consumer-facing programs offered at the State Treasurer's Office.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Curtis M. Loftis, Jr., Treasurer of the State of South Carolina.
