A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE HONORABLE GARRY R. SMITH OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON BEHALF OF HIS CONSTITUENTS AND THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives learned with sincere regret that Garry R. Smith will depart from the House of Representatives at the conclusion of his current term; and

Whereas, born in Aiken on March 4, 1957, he is the son of J. Roland and Peggy Smith, and he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina-Aiken in 1979 and a master's degree in public administration from the University of South Carolina in 1983; and

Whereas, Representative Smith married his beloved wife, Brenda L. Harman, on August 4, 1979, and together they have reared two fine children, Michael Grady and Dana Michelle. When away from his duties in the House of Representatives, he is a businessman residing in Simpsonville; and

Whereas, deeply involved in his community, he served as the administrator of Bamberg County from 1988 to 1992, the administrator of the City of Simpsonville from 1992 to 1995, and the president of the Simpsonville Rotary Club from 1997 to 1998; and

Whereas, Representative Smith has served his profession with dedication as the president of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Public Administrators from 1988 to 1990; president of South Carolina Managers, Administrators and Supervisors from 1991 to 1992; chairman of the Committee on City Legislative Issues for the South Carolina City and County Management Association from 1993 to 1994; and chairman of the Greenville County Chief Administrative Officer Group in 1995; and

Whereas, an active member of Simpsonville United Methodist Church, he served the congregation as president of the Men's Ministry in 2003; and

Whereas, Representative Smith has faithfully served the citizens of District 27 in the House of Representatives since 2003, during which time he has served on the Ways and Means Committee and as chairman of the Operations and Management Committee; and

Whereas, in all of his service for almost two decades in the House, he has provided informed counsel and keen business acumen; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives will miss the wise and insightful service that Garry Smith, their friend and colleague, has given to the House of Representatives, and hope that he will enjoy deep fulfillment in the years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Honorable Garry R. Smith of Greenville County for his dedicated service in the House of Representatives on behalf of his constituents and the citizens of South Carolina and wish him much success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Garry R. Smith.
