A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME CORSAIR STREET IN HORRY COUNTY "PATROLMAN FIRST CLASS JOE MCGARRY WAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly wish to honor the ultimate sacrifice of Patrolman First Class Joe McGarry, who was killed in the line of duty; and

Whereas, a native of Hartford, Connecticut, Patrolman Joe McGarry was hired by the Myrtle Beach Police Department in 1999 as a member of the Street Crimes Unit; and

Whereas, on December 29, 2002, Patrolman McGarry was shot and killed while attempting to talk to a murder suspect. Believing the suspect to be armed, Patrolman McGarry told the suspect he intended to pat him down. The subject then turned to walk away. As Patrolman McGarry attempted to stop him, the subject shot Patrolman McGarry and killed him; and

Whereas, Patrolman McGarry was survived by his parents and fiancé; and

Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to Patrolman McGarry by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name Corsair Street in Horry County "Patrolman First Class Joe McGarry Way" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
