A house RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MRS. BETTY F. YOUNG FOR HER MORE THAN FORTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS LEADER OF THE GENERAL MISSIONARY MINISTRY OF COLUMBIA'S ZION CANAAN BAPTIST CHURCH, INC., AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED FULFILLMENT AND SUCCESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House is pleased to learn that Mrs. Betty F. Young, leader of the General Missionary Ministry of Columbia's Zion Canaan Baptist Church, is celebrating over four decades of committed service to that venerable ministry and will be honored by her church for her service on January 26, 2025; and

Whereas, Columbia native Betty Young retired from Richland School District One in 1997 after thirty-two years of service, having been honored as Teacher of the Year in 1984. In all her labors for church, school, and community, she has found her greatest support in her beloved family: her husband, Henry C. Young Sr.; and their three sons, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, with great grace, skill, and dedication, Betty Young has worn many hats during her lifetime of service at Zion Canaan Baptist. In addition to carrying out her leadership duties with the General Missionary Ministry and Missionary Circle #4, Mrs. Young served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and member of the Senior Musical Choir. Moreover, she has served as a deaconess (forty-eight years), church decorator, Communion caretaker, and member of the Pastor's Compensation Committee and helped organize her church's Kitchen and Food Service departments. She has been chaplain to the State Baptist Youth Department, second vice president of the Gethsemane Women's Convention, and member of the Gethsemane Convention's executive board (the latter for over twenty-five years), and she is presently chair of the Nominating Committee, as well as second vice president emeritus of the Gethsemane Women's Association; and

Whereas, among her many other church activities, this staunch leader and supporter of home and foreign mission work is directly involved in obtaining funding for Gethsemane Association mission projects, and she fights hard to support missions in the community at large, abroad, and in the mission stations of the National Baptist Convention, USA; and

Whereas, Mrs. Young's spirit of excellence and dedicated service have not gone unappreciated. In addition to many other recognitions, she was featured in Accenting Baptist Leadership in South Carolina by the South Carolina Baptist E&M Convention. In 2017, she received the Living Legacy Award from the Gethsemane Baptist Association as an outstanding missionary of Zion Canaan Baptist Church, and Church Women United honored her in 2023 as the Key Baptist Woman of the Columbia branch. In that same year, she was presented the Living Legacy Award by the Women's Baptist E&M Convention of South Carolina; and

Whereas, those who know her will affirm with one voice her exemplification of Proverbs 31:29-31, which reads in part, "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised"; and

Whereas, the House takes great pleasure in adding its voice of commendation to the many encomiums honoring this faithful servant of God, Mrs. Betty F. Young. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Betty F. Young for her more than forty years of dedicated service as leader of the General Missionary Ministry of Columbia's Zion Canaan Baptist Church, Inc., and wish her continued fulfillment and success in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Betty F. Young.
