A house RESOLUTION

 

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF Mattie Kennedy Barr OF Richland COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Mattie Kennedy Barr at the age of eighty-six on September 12, 2024; and

 

Whereas, born in Fairfield County on July 10, 1938, she was the fourth child of the late Miner Kennedy and Tommie Lee McGraw Kennedy, and she was reared in a loving, Christian family with nine siblings: Thelma Jackson, Moses Kennedy, Ernest Kennedy, the late Almenia Henderson, the late Mary McDaniel, the late Miner Kennedy, the late Frank Kennedy, the late Leroy Kennedy, and the late Thomas Kennedy; and

 

Whereas, with constant faith in God throughout her life, Mrs. Barr joined St. Matthews First Baptist Church in Winnsboro at an early age, and years later, she became a devoted member of Refuge Temple Church in Columbia; and

 

Whereas, she was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County and graduated from McCrorey-Liston High School in 1957.  She was employed primarily as a seamstress for several years and as a transportation assistant when she retired; and

 

Whereas, a beloved mother, Mrs. Barr reared three fine children: Otis Barr of Smyrna, Georgia; Kelvin Barr of Raleigh, North Carolina; and the late Candy Bowen.  Her children blessed her with the affection of three grandchildren: Hope Bowen of Jacksonville, Florida, and Christopher and Chloe Barr of Smyrna, Georgia; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Mattie Barr and for the example of friendship and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Mattie Kennedy Barr of Richland County and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mattie Kennedy Barr.
