VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
A house RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE Gray Collegiate Academy girls track and field TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2024 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Gray Collegiate track team of Lexington County captured the state title at the state meet held at Lower Richland High School on May 18, 2024; and
Whereas, to the excitement of their faithful fans, the Gray Collegiate Lady War Eagles, with only nine athletes to qualify for state, bested a competitive Bishop England 75-72, as well as thirty other teams from all over the State to earn the program's first-ever South Carolina High School League state title in track; and
Whereas, Gray Collegiate posted three first-place finishers in individual events: Tresta Miller in the 400 meters (58.33), Aubrey Guy in the 100-meter hurdles (15.42), and Tamara Steward in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.00); and
Whereas, junior Tresta Miller earned two second-place finishes for the Lady Eagles in the 100 meters (12.04) and the long jump (5.51m) for 16 additional points for Gray Collegiate. Aubrey Guy was third in the 400 hurdles (1:08.60), and Tamara Steward was fifth in the long jump (5.02m). Zaria Gaines contributed points in the 100 meters (12.57) and in the 200 meters (26.27) with a seventh- and eighth-place finish, respectively; and
Whereas, Gray Collegiate placed second in both the 4x100 (48.98), run by Tamara Steward, Zaria Gaines, Taylor Jones, and Aubrey Guy, and the 4x400 Relay (3:27.82), run by Tamara Steward, Amariah Gonzalez, Taylor Jones, and Zaria Gaines. Those relays added 16 total points; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands individual excellence, strategy, and dedication, Head Coach Jackie Robinson, former Orangeburg-Wilkinson High and Clemson University track athlete, and his skilled coaching staff maximized their own athletic ability and training to build a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes life principles that will endure beyond the track; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the pride and recognition that the Gray Collegiate track team has brought to the school and their community, and the members look forward to following the team's continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Gray Collegiate Academy girls track and field team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2024 South Carolina Class AA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Brian Newsome and Coach Jackie Robinson.
