A house RESOLUTION

 

To express appreciation to Dr. Milburn Price for his lifetime of contributions and influence on choral musicians and compositions and to wish him much joy and contentment in the years ahead.

 

Whereas, in concert halls across the country, former students of Dr. Milburn Price continue to carry on the lessons and techniques he taught them as an instructor of choral music and compositions throughout a career that has taken him to twenty-four states and to countries as far away as Russia and Australia; and

 

Whereas, born April 9, 1938, in Electric Mills, Mississippi, Dr. Price earned his bachelor's degree in music from the University of Mississippi in 1960, followed by a master's degree in 1963. He went on to earn his doctorate in musical arts from the University of Southern California in 1967. Post doctoral studies were done at Princeton Theological Seminary and Candler School of Theology at Emory University; and

 

Whereas, he is a former dean of the School of Performing Arts at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he conducted the Samford A Cappella Choir and the university orchestra, and taught conducting, voice, and church music courses. For twelve years he served as dean of the School of Church Music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; was chair of the music department at Furman University from 1972 to 1981; was a visiting professor and acting chair of choral music at Stetson University, and a visiting professor at Mercer University and Mississippi College. He also served as national president of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) from 1999 to 2001; and

 

Whereas, his choral compositions and arrangements have been published by Oxford University Press, Hinshaw Music, Alliance Music Publications, and numerous others. He has written text and music for a number of hymns, some of which have been included in the 1975 and 1991 editions of the Baptist Hymnal and in The Worshipping Church (1990). Dr. Price is a co-author of The Dialogue of Worship and A Survey of Christian Hymnody, now in its fourth edition. He also has written articles on music and worship that have appeared in The Choral Journal, The Hymn, and Review and Expositor; and

 

Whereas, in 2006, Dr. Price was honored with the award for Exemplary Leadership in Church Music from Baylor University's Center for Christian Music Studies. The same year he received the biennial Award for Choral Excellence from ACDA's Southern Division. The previous year the Baptist Church Music Conference bestowed him with the W. Hines Sims Award for his contributions to church music among Baptists; and

 

Whereas, throughout his expansive career Dr. Price was aided by his wife, Barbara Stevens Price. The couple has a son, Steven who, with his wife, Catherine, have blessed them with granddaughter, Shelby, and grandson, Sidney; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina House honors the enduring legacy of Dr. Milburn Price whose music and vision have echoed far beyond concert halls and churches, inspiring generations. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express appreciation to Dr. Milburn Price for his lifetime of contributions and influence on choral musicians and compositions and to wish him much joy and contentment in the years ahead.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Milburn Price.
