TO AMEND SECTION 56-5-5350, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE ANNUAL MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTIONS, SO AS TO REQUIRE BIENNIAL RATHER THAN ANNUAL INSPECTIONS; AND TO AMEND SECTION 56-5-5360 RELATING TO OFFICIAL INSPECTION STATIONS, AND THE APPLICABLE FEES, SO AS TO INCREASE THE MAXIMUM INSPECTION FEE FROM TWO AND ONE-HALF DOLLARS TO NINE DOLLARS AND TO INCREASE THE INSPECTION STICKER FEE FROM FIFTY CENTS TO ONE DOLLAR.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 56-5-5350(a) of the 1976 Code is amended to read:
"(a) Effective on and after January 1, 1969, the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation shall require that every Every vehicle registered in this State, except house trailers, shall must be inspected at least once a year every two years and have displayed display at all times a South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation-approved certificate of inspection and approval in a practical location specified by the department. No person shall may drive or move operate on any highway any a vehicle, except a house trailers trailer, unless there shall be in effect and properly displayed thereon a current certificate of inspection is properly displayed on it."
SECTION 2. Section 56-5-5360(d) of the 1976 Code is amended to read:
"(d) Official inspection stations may charge a fee of not more than two nine dollars and fifty cents for each inspection and fifty cents one dollar for the issuance of an inspection certificates certificate. Provided, that if any If a vehicle does not pass inspection at any a station and is taken to another place to have such the defect corrected, the fee shall may not be charged again provided if the motor vehicle is taken to the station which originally made the inspection. Inspection forms shall must be prepared by the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation and furnished to inspection stations at a cost of fifty cents one dollar each."
SECTION 3. This act takes effect on the first day of the sixth month following approval by the Governor.
