A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE COACH F. GERALD MOODY OF MONCKS CORNER FOR HIS INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC COACHES ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS LIFELONG PROMOTION OF AND SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS.

Whereas, Coach F. Gerald Moody, a native of Dillon, South Carolina, began his athletic career at Dillon High School as a four-year letterman in football, basketball, baseball and boxing; and

Whereas, in 1941, Mr. Moody played in both inaugural Shrine Bowl and North-South All-Star games; and

Whereas, following graduation from Dillon High School, he played both baseball and football at Wofford College until his graduation; and

Whereas, while attending Wofford College, Mr. Moody played baseball in the Greenville Textile League; and

Whereas, he continued playing baseball in the Eastern Carolina League; and

Whereas, Coach Moody began his distinguished coaching career at Berkeley High School in 1953, and over fourteen successful seasons his teams compiled a record of 121 wins, 31 losses and 4 ties, including the 1960 Class A State Championship; and

Whereas, between the years 1967 and 1972, Coach Moody coached at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina; and

Whereas, between the years 1972 and 1977, Coach Moody coached at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; and

Whereas, between the years 1977 until his retirement in 1989, Coach Moody returned to Berkeley High School to lead his football teams to a record of 62 wins and 41 losses, including a South Carolina Division AAA championship in 1981; and

Whereas, his combined record between the years 1953 and 1989 is an outstanding 269 wins, 123 losses and 8 ties, which includes competing in seven state championship games; and

Whereas, Coach Moody has been named conference "Coach of the Year" a total of six times; and

Whereas, on four separate occasions, he has served as head or assistant coach in the Shrine Bowl and the North-South All-Star games, and is the only individual to have played and coached both the North and South Carolina teams in the Shrine Bowl; and

Whereas, Coach Moody has written and published an article for the Athletic Journal; and

Whereas, in 1988, Coach Moody received the prestigious Order of the Palmetto; and

Whereas, he and his wife, the former Julia E. Sanders of Fayetteville, North Carolina, are the parents of two daughters, Catherine and Nancy, and have one grandson, Chris Patterson; and

Whereas, the Moody's are residents of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, where they attend the First Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Coach F. Gerald Moody will be inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame on July 26, 1995. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their gratitude and congratulate Coach F. Gerald Moody for his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, his lifelong achievements in South Carolina athletics and his contributions to the youth of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach F. Gerald Moody and his family.
