AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 616 OF 1980, RELATING TO COMPENSATION AND TRAVEL ALLOWANCE OF MEMBERS OF THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, SO AS TO PROVIDE FOR THE ELECTION OF THE CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN AT ITS REGULAR MEETING IN JANUARY, TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF COMPENSATION AND TRAVEL ALLOWANCE PAYABLE TO MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, AND TO ALLOW THE PROVISION OF MEDICAL INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR THE MEMBERS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Election of officers and compensation for members

SECTION 1. Section 1 of Act 616 of 1980 is amended to read:

"Section 1. The Lee County Board of Education shall elect one of its members as chairman and another as vice chairman at its regular meeting in January. The board shall hold a regular meeting monthly and special meetings as necessary. The members of the board shall be paid the sum of three thousand six hundred dollars and the chairman shall be paid the sum of four thousand one hundred dollars each school year, payable in monthly installments. Members and the chairman also shall be paid at the rate of one hundred dollars a month for official travel attending meetings and other official business when approved by the county board of education. The county board of education also may approve the provision of medical insurance coverage for the board members and the chairman as an incident of their service."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect January 1, 1999.
