TO RECOGNIZE THE HUNDREDS OF TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION PROFESSIONALS AND ADVOCATES FOR THEIR TIRELESS WORK IN REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF TEEN PREGNANCY IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO EXPRESS SUPPORT OF THESE INDIVIDUALS AND OTHERS IN THEIR FIGHT TO FURTHER REDUCE THE NUMBER OF TEEN PREGNANCIES IN OUR FINE STATE.
Whereas, teen pregnancies have far-reaching consequences that adversely affect the health, education, and future of the youth of South Carolina; and
Whereas, despite recent improvements in teen pregnancy rates, South Carolina has the 12th highest teen birth rate in the nation with more than 10,000 pregnancies by young ladies 10 - 19 years of age; and
Whereas, adolescent mothers often are unable to complete their education, resulting in increased underemployment, unemployment, and dependence on public welfare; and
Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly established a nationally acclaimed Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Grant Program to help every South Carolina county address this growing problem by involving youth service providers, religious institutions, businesses, media, parents, educational institutions, and policy makers; and
Whereas, each county in South Carolina has a teen pregnancy prevention program in place to educate our youth on the negative effects of teen pregnancy. This will allow them to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives and reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in our cities, counties, and State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That, by this resolution, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognize the tireless work of teen pregnancy professionals and advocates who are dedicated to reducing the incidence of teen pregnancies in South Carolina, further recognize that the teen pregnancy prevention programs in South Carolina serve as models to other states in the nation, and express their support of programs and services that will further reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 1511 Gregg Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201.
