VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CONGRATULATE THE SUMTER HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM OF SUMTER COUNTY ON ITS MOST IMPRESSIVE SEASON WINNING THE CLASS AAAA STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR ITS PLAYERS AND THEIR COACH, BROOKS SHUMAKE, ON A SENSATIONAL SEASON.
Whereas, the Sumter High School Gamecocks made history by defeating the Dorman High School Cavaliers 5-0 and capturing its first Class AAAA state baseball title; and
Whereas, after nine years at the helm, Coach Shumake, a member of the 1981 Hartsville High School championship team, was able to provide his team of young talented athletes with the joy and excitement of winning a championship which they will cherish for the rest of their lives; and
Whereas, the Gamecocks worked hard throughout the season at improving their speed, strength, and ability to hit, catch and throw the ball, while managing to go 8-0 in the state playoffs and finishing the season with a remarkable 25-6 record; and
Whereas, Sumter won the championship by riding a strong pitching performance from starter Matt Price and relief pitcher Allen Caldwell and scrounging together enough offense to finish off the sweep in the best-of-three series with the Cavaliers; and
Whereas, up 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Gamecocks pulled together to escape a scare by the Cavaliers as Allen Caldwell was able to retire pinch hitter Russ Callicut of Dorman and end the inning after they loaded the bases; and
Whereas, Sumter got its final run in the bottom of the sixth when second baseman Tripp Ward stole home to put the Gamecocks up 5-0. Ward also sealed the victory over the Cavaliers in the top of the seventh after snagging a sinking line drive by Dorman's Thomas Groome to get the final out of the game; and
Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly takes great pride in recognizing the young men of the Sumter High School baseball team on an outstanding season and in honoring them as tremendous model-student athletes who demonstrate the rewards of perseverance and teamwork. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate the Sumter High School baseball team of Sumter County on its most impressive season winning the Class AAAA State baseball championship title and honor its players and their coach, Brooks Shumake, on a sensational season.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the players, coaches, and school officials of the Sumter High School baseball team.
