VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF THE REVEREND DR. LEWIS P. GRAHAM, SR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, CHURCH, AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of beloved husband, father, pastor, and community leader the Reverend Dr. Lewis P. Graham, Sr.; and
Whereas, born in Conway in 1949 the son of the late Gracie and J. D. Graham, he was married to his beloved Mary Alice Gerald Graham for thirty-five years, and together they raised two adoring children, Alicia LeWanna and Lewis, Jr.; and
Whereas, Reverend Graham earned a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of divinity from Morris College in Sumter, and he did further study at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and received an honorary doctor of divinity from Morris College; and
Whereas, licensed as a minister at the age of seventeen and ordained a year later, he faithfully served as pastor and assistant pastor in churches in Conway, Effingham, Orangeburg, Florence, and Greenville, until he assumed his duties in 1995 to pastor the loving congregation of Zion Baptist Church in Columbia; and
Whereas, Reverend Graham also served his community in numerous organizations, including a life membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and as a member of the trustees of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina. In 2005, he was elected to serve as its president; and
Whereas, among the many honors bestowed upon him, he was selected by the National Council of Negro Women to receive the Excellence in Leadership Award, and he received the Martin Luther King Community Service Award; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are truly grateful for the Reverend Dr. Lewis P. Graham's dedication to winning souls to Jesus Christ through preaching the gospel and living a committed Christian life. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of the Reverend Dr. Lewis P. Graham, Sr., of Richland County, and express their deepest sympathy to his family, church, and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary Alice Gerald Graham.
